Oh, the weather outside is frightful and your new deck sure was delightful during the summertime. But, now that it’s winter you’re just letting the snow pile up on it. Stop that! It’s important to keep up with the care of your great new deck or else it won’t be quite as beautiful in the spring when you’re grilling up some burgers or getting reacquainted with the feeling of a breeze on your face that doesn’t sting.
Treat your deck with sealant
One way to make sure the constant accumulation and melting of snow doesn’t hurt your deck is to treat it with a sealant to protect it from water buildup. Our decks are durable and last the test of time and the elements, but if you’re not sure how long it’s been since it was treated— best give it a nice even coat. There are a ton of different sealants on the market, but once you do some research and find the product that is just right, a good seal keeps your deck in great shape all winter long.
Clean off your deck during the winter
It’s tempting to let the snow and debris build up over the winter. What’s the use of shoveling off the deck when you’re not going to be sitting out on the deck sipping some tea when its ten below? Lest we repeat ourselves, we’re just going to say clean off your deck during the winter. Buildup of snow and debris can weigh significantly on your deck (especially older decks) and take a heavy toll over time. If you didn’t take our prior advice and your deck isn’t sealed you’re going to be looking at the deck absorbing moisture over time when the snow and slush just sits atop the wood for months on end.
When we build you your perfect deck, we want you to be able to enjoy it for years and years. Take care of it and it will bring you seasons of joy. If you make it a habit to keep an eye on the integrity of your outdoor structures they will ho-ho-hold up…
We’re sorry. Enjoy the holiday season!
