Pergolas can be a great addition to an outdoor space. They can be used to enhance the look of your outdoor living space and create a relaxing space for your family and friends. Here are a few ideas on how they may help compliment your back yard:
- A Flowering Spot
Pergolas make a great support structure for flowering vines and greenery, also creating additional shaded areas to enjoy.
Some pergolas can be used as an accent area to an entrance to create a more welcoming space between home and deck spaces.
- Focal Point
A well positioned pergola can create a beautiful sitting area and focal point for a garden environment.
- Soft Colorful Shading
Utilizing fabric on a pergola can be a useful accessory to help shade an area from sunlight or unwanted views, additional accents may be incorporated in the form of tie-backs or other decorative pieces.
Space constraints may restrict the sizing of a pergola, however using even a small one may help create an intimate seating or backdrop in an otherwise bland space.
Our high quality durable vinyl pergolas offer a variety of eye-catching, useful additions to improve your outdoor space. These structures, decorative or functional, may be just the thing you are looking for to complete your outdoor space!

Are you looking for a new outdoor structure to add some body and shade to your outdoor space? Consider a pergola from poly enterprises!
A pergola is a landscaping structure very similar to an arbor, but there are differences between the two.
Garden arbors are simple, relatively small structures; often, they are arched at the top and a pergola is a larger structure. Sometimes given greater architectural treatment, they may exhibit masonry columns. Traditional pergola design leads back to grand masonry pergolas of the Italian Renaissance. But the term, “pergola” is used more loosely now, and includes wooden structures.
Like garden arbors and latticework, pergolas are often used as support structures for vines. The vines form a canopy over the pergola, affording shade in summer. Select a large, vigorous vine for this purpose, such as Dutchman’s pipe. But to afford complete shade, plus protection from rain, some people cover their pergolas. Whether you plan to cover your pergola or decorate it in flowers during the summer and spring months, this classy structure could be just what you are looking for to add that missing element to your outdoor space! We know that flower season is almost over here in central New York, but it’s a great time to start planning for next year! If you are thinking of improving your outdoor space in the spring check out Poly Enterprises vinyl pergolas and arbors.
Adding flowers to your vinyl pergolas and arbors are a great way to add some color to your yard or deck. Understanding just how these plants grow and attach to structures is the first step in choosing which ones will work best on your arbor or pergola.
Climbing plants with tendrils use wiry growths that reach out looking for something to grab onto.
Twiners are plants that have either twining leaves or stems that twist or curl around supporting structures.
Scramblers are plants like rambling roses that have flexible vine-like stems and perhaps thorns that help them grip anything nearby; they need to be trained by having their growth tied to the support structure.
Other plants, like certain ivies, attach to surfaces with adhesive pads on their stem tendrils or stem roots. To grow on an arbor, choose types that weave their way well through slats and other structures. When selecting the right climbing plants to add consider these beautiful perennials climbers, as they need just a bit of coaxing to grow:
When selecting flowers to climb your vinyl pergolas or arbors, perennials make excellent choices because they come back year after year. However, if you like to change the look of your garden from time to time, you can consider many great annuals such as morning glories and sweet peas. Just be sure that your pergola or arbor is strong enough to hold the weight of the stems of the climbing plant you choose. Some vines, such as wisteria, can get extremely heavy, and although Poly Enterprises stands behind our products it is always a good idea to stay away from plants that could possibly cause harm to your property.

Sometimes you get a chance to make a good thing even better. That’s what we did last week in New Hartford, NY when we installed an outdoor retractable pergola canopy system onto a pergola we built last season.
In and earlier post, we detailed the installation of our white vinyl pergola. In this project, we installed the structure on their stone patio to cover the outdoor kitchen. It looked great, tied in the stone counter and seating, and gave some height to the space of the back yard. The homeowners loved the new look, and impressed with the speed of the installation.
Naturally, the pergola became the place for outdoor gatherings, as the mini-bar and seating were placed underneath. The only problem was that with the hot New York sun, the stone patio became quite warm. Some shade would be great!
That’s where we come in. After a quick call from the homeowner, we showed them a variety of canvas styles for our Pergola Canvas Systems. They chose a brown earth tone, which matched well with both the texture of the stone and the muted browns and creams of the house. We came out for the installation, and in a few hours they had the shade they needed, and an ever better looking pergola!
The Benefits of Pergola Canopy Systems
The addition of the pergola canopy can help any homeowner improve their back yard by:
- Helping provide shade and protection from the sun
- Retractable canvas pieces will adjust to fit changing conditions
- Canvas is easy to clean, and resists fading
- Beautiful color selections provide visual appeal and style
